In the loud and sticky atmosphere of the boxing gym, where boxers’ gloves slip down the sweaty shoulders of their training partners, where the drops of sweat are dispersed on mirrors, punching bags, and on the floors, where the sweat drips from the edges of boxers’ bodies and the sounds of heavy breathing, the sign of physical hardship, fill the air and the lungs of others, it became clear that to engage with the gendered embodied experience of boxing seriously means to open up the research to its sensuous reality.
Together with the visiting lecturer Kris Orszaghova (aka Rocky), who teaches the course “Gender, Sex, and Sports”, we will tap into boxing's sensuous and bodily universe. We will not engage with boxing theoretically but carnally. The workshop will last approximately an hour and introduce the participants to the basic boxing movements. While boxing is a contact sport, it can also be trained without contact. During the workshop, you will have the freedom to decide to what extent you are comfortable with engaging with the body of the other. Understanding that we all have bodily limitations to various extents – temporary or permanent – I will attempt to accommodate your specific needs. To do that, I would like to ask you to let me know your needs in advance. You can do so by emailing the following address: OrszaghovaK@ceu.edu. If you feel uncomfortable sharing information that might be too sensitive and personal, instead of letting me know in advance, you can join the workshop and not perform the exercises you feel uncomfortable with without explaining.
What to bring:
- Comfortable clothes and shoes (no jeans, preferably shorts or sweatpants, sneakers)
- Drinking bottle
- Small towel
If the weather is nice, the workshop will take place outdoors. Depending on the weather, bring a hoodie or a long-sleeve T-shirt.
