Erzsébet Barát was Associate Professor in the Department of English, at the University of Szeged (1989-2023) and has been Recurring Visiting Professor at CEU since September 2000. She holds a PhD in Linguistics from the Social Sciences Faculty, Lancaster University, UK. Her research interests include feminist critical theory, relational models of identity, and the relationship between language, power, and ideology. She is founding Editor-in-Chief of the Hungarian journal, TNTeF: Interdisciplinary e-Journal of Gender Studies (https://ojs.bibl.u-szeged.hu/index.php/tntef/index). She launched and organized the annual gender studies conference in Szeged between 2005 - 2022 and was founding director of the specialization of ‘Gender through Literatures and Cultures in English’ as part of the MA in English Studies, University of Szeged (2009-2023). She has been awarded the Käthe Leichter Guest Professorship in Gender Studies, Universität Wien, Austria in 2013 and in 2023. Her academic performance has been acknowledged by Nobilia, the Gender Studies Award by the Gender Studies Forum, Mid Sweden University, Sundsvall in November 2022, and her perseverance as a scholar was rewarded by the UNESCO Chair Jubilee Medal by Maria Grzegorzewska University, Warsaw for "relentless research activism in support of gender studies and women's and minority rights" in March 2024. Her contribution to feminist scholarship and work for building the academic community in Hungary was recognized by Margit Kaffka Award, founded by TNT, Gender Studies Research Group, University of Szeged in September 2024. She is currently working on the Gender and Censorship chapter for the Oxford University Press Reader entitled "Sociology of Language and Censorship".
