A Feminist Discussion of Global Security

Abstract:
Recent international policy interventions have sought to foreground the role that women and gender play in armed conflict, insecurity, and peacebuilding. From the passing of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on ‘Women, Peace, and Security’ in 2000, this policy framework has sought to improve the lives of women in conflict-affected areas, and involve women in efforts to prevent conflict, negotiate peace agreements, and rebuild societies post-conflict. In this talk, Dr. Margaret Jenkins and Dr. Sara Meger will discuss some of the problematic and largely unforeseen implications of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda. Based on a feminist epistemology, this event departs from conventional academic public lectures and will be based, rather, on a conversation both between the speakers and with the audience, which will critically investigate, examine, and problematize some of the central assumptions and norms driving the WPS agenda and offer new insight into why substantial gains on implementing 1325 remain elusive.
