Department of Gender Studies Mourns Ann Snitow

August 12, 2019

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of Ann Snitow, a prominent feminist scholar and activist, and a long time close friend and supporter of our Department.

Ann Snitow was Associate Professor of Literature and Gender Studies at Lang College, The New School, and a feminist activist since 1969, when she was a founding member of New York Radical Feminists. She co-edited Powers of Desire: The Politics of Sexuality (1983) and The Feminist Memoir Project: Voices from Women’s Liberation (1998). A collection of her essays, called The Feminism of Uncertainty: A Gender Diary, was published by Duke University Press (2015).

Ann Snitow’s scholarly and activist work was particularly important for Central and Eastern Europe. A co-founder of the Network of East-West Women (NEWW), she will be remembered for her huge support to scholars and activists in the region, her personal engagement, and her friendliness and warmth she so generously shared.

Ann Snitow will be sorely missed by her colleagues and friends.
