CFA: Full fellowships for the PhD in Comparative Gender Studies at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary
Application deadline: February 1, 2015. See http://www.ceu.hu/admissions/2015-2016 for details.
The Gender Studies Department at CEU invites applications for its US-accredited PhD Program in Comparative Gender Studies. CEU is an English language graduate university with a focus on social sciences and the humanities located in the center of Budapest. The Gender Studies Department is one of the largest in Europe, distinguished by its balanced attention to both humanities and social sciences in the study of gender and sexuality. The program prepares students for careers in academia, research, public service, and related fields.
We invite high quality applications on any topic in gender studies, particularly those that make use of interdisciplinary approaches. While we offer strong resources for studies of Central and Eastern Europe, project proposals are not restricted by region or time period. Proposed projects must fall within the supervisory competence of the department's faculty, subject to faculty availability. Please note, however, that supervisors are chosen only after the first term in the program; it is not necessary to name one in the application or to secure agreement on supervision prior to applying.
Successful applicants receive a tuition waiver and three years of living stipend. The program entails one year of coursework and proposal writing, after which students must pass the comprehensive exam before continuing on to research and thesis writing. Serving as a teaching assistant is also a requirement. Additional funding, exchange opportunities, and resources and training in teaching in higher education are also available from CEU. The PhD must be completed within a maximum of six years after enrollment.
Eligible applicants must have a Masters degree in Gender Studies or related discipline (completed before enrollment into the program) and a strong background in gender scholarship as well as knowledge in the area(s) of the proposed topic. Applicants who lack sufficient background in Gender Studies may be encouraged to first enroll in one of the department's MA programs (one or two years).
